With 25 years experience in the sector, in 1978 Agustí Torelló Mata produced the first bottle of Kripta. His aim was to produce the best cava with the native Penedès varieties, ageing it for five years. That's when he patented a unique bottle, the Kripta, which has become an icon in the world of sparkling wines.
The inspiration for the original winery Agustí Torelló Mata built in stone in Can Rossell de la Serra, 4 km from Sant Sadurní came from the ancient Greek Kripttn or the Latin Crypta – the hidden, underground places Christianity made into the most sacred spaces of churches. That made Kripta a cult cava from the very beginning.
ONE MAN’S
IDEAL
THREE
TERROIRS
Vinya
del Vicari
1962
Planted in 1962 at 239 metres above sea level in a gravelly area with plenty of drainage and gobelet trained. With an average production of 6,000 kg/ha, thin skin and compact appearance, this is the most delicate variety of the three grapes, and the main base for Kripta. It brings it finesse, elegance and notes of white fruit.
Vinya
del Mercader
1974
Planted in 1974 in an espalier system to achieve greater leaf exposure at 162 metres above sea level in a clay and limestone soil. With loose bunches and thick skin, this is the strongest, most straightforward variety. It provides alcoholic power, body and structure.
Vinya Lola
Planted in 1969 in Sant Joan de Mediona at 650 metres above sea level, this grape grows with special notes of mineral salinity. With large berries and thick skin, at this height it enjoys excellent day/night thermal exchange, especially important when growing in the fresh hilltop air. This gives it a great concentration of aromas and acidity, and tropical notes.
Agustí Torelló Mata captured the essence of these three vineyards and turned their grapes into a unique, exceptional cava: Krypta, the perfect fusion between human wisdom and the Earth.
TIME
Kripta is a dialogue with time that reflects the complexity, harmony and all the nuances of a long ageing process lasting at least eight years.
Kripta rests for almost 85 months in the darkness and silence of the cellars.
Ageing with a real cork creates a perfect autolysis of the yeasts which, over time, gives it particular sensory characteristics.
THE BOTTLE
The amphora shape causes a constant, circular movement of the lees in suspension, which manages to give the cava unique complexity, balance and creaminess.
THE LABEL
The label, the work of the artist Rafael Bartolozzi, evokes the landscape of Cadaqués with poppies and an olive branch, symbols of the Mediterranean, the birthplace of our civilisation and a tradition that has endured for millennia.
